On Wednesday, September 21, documentary filmmaker and activist Alex Kronemer (Unity Productions) spoke to guests at the Buxton initiative and showed clips from several of his works detailing the lives of Muslims in the U.S., life in Muslim Spain, and the legacy of Muhammad. American Muslims, he said, are misunderstood and mischaracterized in the media. His documentaries elucidate the lives of American Muslims and how the interact with the community, whether they be an Imam, a doctor, or a pilot. His presentation was followed by a response from Robin Smith, the founder of Video/Action. Both filmmakers engaged in a lively discussion on the role of individual storylines in documentaries and on portrayals of the ‘other’ in modern media.
